SEO means Search Engine Optimization. The idea here is to get search engines to like your website and rank it higher and higher when people do searches in google.
Many people call this “free” traffic or “free SEO traffic” because it comes from the search engines.
While “free”, a lot of time (and sometimes money) has to go into Search Engine Optimization. It is not all that it cracks up to be. The visitors enter some keywords or keywords phrases and the search engine returns your page somewhere (hopefully on the first page).
Before that can happen, here are five things to know about getting SEO traffic.
Knowing these 7 things will help you get a better understanding of what SEO is and how it works:
1. You want to have an “authority” site.
There are many tactics to get to number one in a search engine. Sometimes you target “long tail” keywords (i.e. niche specific phrases). Other times you want to go for the “big show” and target a very competitive and generic keyword. Whatever way you choose, always have in mind that you want your site to act like an “authority” site which means good quality content and a site that would be deemed “important” to its topic.
2. Becoming an authority site and getting traffic through SEO is a long (sometimes tedious) process
Many SEO tactics are very repetitive and must be done over and over, day in and day out. Even if you knew exactly what to do in what order it takes time to develop a high enough quality score, you will find it takes a long time. In fact age of a website is one of the factors on how high it gets ranked.
3. Keyword Research: Figure Out What Phrases You Want To Be Found For
While important, it is surprising how many people do NOT do keyword research. Why bother ranking for a keyword that is searched only one time a month?

4. Backlinks, backlinks, backlinks. SEO Link Building is the key
Talking about tedious SEO tasks, building backlinks to your website is an arduous task. You want a combination of link quality and a high number of links. For more on this, check out:

5. A Strong SEO Website vs. A Strong Website For Selling Product
Lastly, realize that sometimes these two do not go hand in hand. Sure free traffic is great, but the nature of the site that ends up high in SEO ranking may not be one that should be tailored for selling a product. This is an important point. There are many ways to make money online without worrying about trying to get your page ranked highest for keywords.
Hope this helps!
